Why Core Values?
Posted by Cheri Kuhn on
Hello Doers & Achievers,
Can you remember a time when you were asked to do something that didn’t sit right with you? Perhaps something at work or a request from a friend. Maybe just being involved in a round of gossip. That icky feeling you had is what happens when what you believe inside is out of alignment with your behavior.
In order for us to live our best lives, achieve our goals and dreams while maintaining joy and peace, we need to live our core values. In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey refers to these as your Personal Mission Statement. Regardless of what you choose to call them, they are an essential part of who you are and what you value and it is one of the first steps we include in the Perfect Planner.
Covey takes it one step further. Once you have identified your Core Values, he asks us to describe what those look like in each of our key roles; parent, boss, community member, spouse, etc. In doing so, we can better reflect each quarter on how well we are living our own Core Values. The more aligned we are, the better we will feel physically, emotionally and spiritually.
During your quarterly review, be intentional about reviewing your Core Values / Mission Statement and spend the necessary time reflecting on how you did, and how you can do better. Our brains don’t like dissonance, which is what happens when our thoughts and beliefs are out of alignment with our actions.
