Here at the Perfect Planner, we are all about goals! Most of us have them in some form or another: either personal goals, goals at work, or goals for your business if you are an entrepreneur. Is there such a thing as too many goals? The answer is simple - absolutely!
Why does any of this matter? It doesn’t if you have no desire to get more from your life or your business (or both). But if you want to get more; from your business, from your life, from your passions or hobbies; then this matters a great deal. If you want to get more done, you need to do less. If this sounds counterintuitive to you, keep reading.
For the sake of simplicity, let’s focus on setting 90 business priorities - or we call Rocks. You’re not alone if this list of “most important things” that need to get done in a quarter is long. Time and time again we’ve learned from ourselves and others that it is almost impossible to get 12 important things done in the next 90 days. With much encouragement and cajoling, we strive to whittle that list down to a more manageable number (between 3-7; closer to 3).
Now that we’ve determined our Rocks for the quarter, it’s time to make our goals S.M.A.R.T. When your goals are written SMART, they are:
1. SPECIFIC – Is it clearly defined?
2. MEASURABLE – How will you know when it’s done?
3. ATTAINABLE – Is this possible?
4. REALISTIC – Should you be doing this?
5. TIME-BOUND – Is there a deadline?
Going through the hard work of whittling down your Rocks and then spending time defining each goal with the S.M.A.R.T. system will open a whole new world to you. We do it ourselves each quarter and if you’re honest about the process it will change what you focus on.
When you are ready to get more done, just remember: less is more.
